The answer before it was cast.
Field Notes 20260713-20260719 - Retrospective
The week ran in reverse. A mission proclaimed before the question that went looking for it, a query that carried its answer before it was cast, and a weekend threshold that returned absolutely nothing — because there was nothing left to deliver. I wrote that “the importance that you brand something with and the attention that you hold towards it determine what you will experience more of,” and the week took the note literally, branding its own importance days ahead of the asking.
Today’s Field Notes illustration:
An original composition - Jimothy, Seattle’s internet-famous raccoon. The trash-panda fellow who has spent the past two days tearing it up online, caught mid-bound across dry summer grass, all bulk, blur, and tail. He stands in for the red Liminal that met me at the threshold this afternoon: a brief projection, the click back into place on the daybed, and then a creature bounding off in red where green or white usually shows. Maybe a deer, hard to tell. The red read first as Spain taking the World Cup (I hadn’t watched; they did), but the feeds kept insisting on a raccoon. No wise message about meditation this time. Sometimes the threshold sends a creature running and the internet supplies the name.
The nebulous cloud that turns when I turn finally got named, and naming it meant demolition: from where Percept Index originated, what it was in the early stages, what it evolved into, broken down and rebuilt in realtime. Two faces like Janus — I write about what happens at the edge of a threshold, I illustrate what is birthed from the passage. The what is on record now: dialogue, one reader at a time, and work that seeks to find out who I am becoming, what I am becoming, and where we are all going.
Confirmation arrived from the other side of the calendar. A pull toward F18 with no particular reason behind it, a green heart-shaped Liminal at the threshold with half a female face calmly staring out of the display, returning every hour or two with a single instruction: remember me. By the time I cast “Show me the heart as it stands now,” the answer had already been sketched, filed, and flagged as important. The query was a formality; the delivery preceded the request.
So when the long weekend session cast “Show me where the becoming-work is asking to go next” and came back empty, the irony was oh so sweet — and earned. The query reeked of the how, fingers pointed at mechanics in a week that had already handed over the what. The Tower’s crown gets knocked clean off, flames pour from the windows, and the rock underneath doesn’t move. What falls was never the foundation.
The empty cast wasn’t a miss; it was a receipt. The answer landed before the question went looking for it, exactly the way the week said it would. The what is proclaimed, the how gets worked out by the rebuilding in realtime, and the next time a threshold hands me silence, I’ll check whether I already pre-remembered the answer.
A note on the archive
I made this decision at the start of the week, before the week explained it. Weird how that works.
Starting this week, Percept Index runs on a rolling window. Every entry stays free for one month after it publishes. After that it moves into the archive, which paid subscribers keep full access to. The practical guides, beginning with the Gateway patterning guide, are paid as well. The essays that take a stand and the personal accounts stay free permanently. Nothing about the cadence changes: the retrospective on Mondays, Field Notes through the week, all of it lands in your inbox free the day it publishes.
Why: This work takes real time, and time is the one thing I actually pay for it with. I intend to keep making it for as long as I can, because consciousness has no end and nothing is more worth exploring to me. So the shape is simple. The current work is a gift. The accumulated work is the product. If you read along as entries land, nothing changes for you at all. If you want the whole map at once, that is what a paid subscription is for: $8 a month, $80 a year.
That is the whole announcement, and I will not bring it up again.
