Field Notes 20260720-20260726 - Retrospective

One essay, one Field Notes entry, and a week that kept saying the same thing in rooms that don’t talk to each other. The essay speaks on the shift not being a trip: nothing moves, no craft arrives, no one ascends, the world remains and you change. Then a projection put me in a room with no body and no way to travel in it, a guided session dropped me into F10 in under three minutes because I had nothing to grab on to, and a card that went quiet eight weeks ago turned out to have been answered by my very own calendar. Nothing on that list traveled anywhere. All of it arrived in place.

Today’s Field Notes illustration:

An original composition - Me, as Rooster. My rendition of the striking vintage costumes that depict actors in elaborate animal costumes for the 1910 stage production of the famous French play Chantecler. Rostand wrote over seventy animal parts in verse and designed every costume himself, and the stereoscopic glass slides taken backstage at the Porte Saint-Martin catch the cast in the dressing rooms with the headwear already on and the faces half made up, the peacock unable to attach his tail because the room was too small to hold it. Chantecler is the rooster who is certain his crowing is what makes the sun come up. Which is the joke I am making at my own expense this week, hauling a trailer to the coast and running pre-trip maintenance like the ocean is waiting on my say-so. He finds out eventually. He goes on crowing anyway, and that turns out to be the correct response. Half made up in a borrowed dressing room, a man in a bird suit is still the observer inside the creature, and the dawn was never waiting on either of them.

The projection was the boldest demonstration. No hands, no arms, no shoulders, nothing resembling a body part from any point in my field of view, and every time I moved toward the window or the door or the ceiling I sped up until I wasn’t in control of any of it anymore. I keep pondering the need to build a vehicle in these situations. Every piece of literature promises one, and the practitioners with the most hours logged describe dissolving it on purpose once they’ve earned it.

Yet, I show up already dissolved and then try to drive. There is nothing to steer because there is nothing to identify with. Every attempt to control and direct is exactly what ends up with an early exit.

The guided session made the same point from a different angle. Seventeen minutes on a lunch hour, someone else’s voice, a framework I’d never run before, and I was wading in the hypnagogia waters inside of three minutes with the body fully asleep and lightly snoring. It went that fast because I had nothing to grab on to — no familiar landmark to pace myself against, no next step to anticipate. It confirms something I’ve suspected since I first noticed it between the Gateway tapes and hypnosis.

It’s all similar because the human instrument is built a specific way, and getting into human trance is essentially the same road no matter what system or framework you use. Which would mean that someone at some point has held the full human manual going back to the beginning of human time, maybe, and that is a rabbit hole that may never have an answer (also “maybe”). There is no proprietary route in. One road, and every method is a different set of directions to it.

Finally, a loop closed that I didn’t know was open. I went looking through three months of readings for balance symbolism and got a cluster back: Justice twice, Temperance pouring between the cups, the Six of Pentacles merchant weighing coins on his scales, the Two of Swords holding both blades in suspension. April through the end of May, and then it got quiet. It was the schedule, my schedule.

The way I operate, once actually observed, is through engineered and orchestrated tension. Sleep against production, physical training against writing, time with Kim protected and placed on purpose, off-days lined up with the office days, essays forming from brain dumps at the top of the cycle.

I’ve been slowly shifting my activities based on how they interact with each other, weighing input against output, and I never cast a single question about any of it. The deck stopped repeating itself around the time I started to move toward balance beyond the basic instinct to do so. This cycle ran a day short and produced one Field Notes instead of the usual run, which is that same weighing still running, not a shortfall.

Calendars, schedules, plans, they all change. Simply recognizing the change and being at peace with it is half of the story. The other half is how you adapt, where you’re willing to let go, where you protect time and activities, etc.

The essay carried the version of this that costs something. There is someone I love who now appears as a different species of human. I laid out my heart in writing and what arrived on the other end was a threat, and the same words, received by an instrument tuned differently, land as what they are. I ran the test.

You cannot move a person any more than you can move a dimension, because, as I put it in the essay, “we do not see the observer, we see the creatures that we inhabit.” Take your position, lay it out honestly, and release the grip on the outcome without fear or attachment.

Different rooms, same mechanism. Nothing traveled. I retuned, and each of them manifested where I already was. So the instruction this week actually issued isn’t a technique to add to the stack. It’s a thing to stop doing: quit building the vehicle, the form. There isn’t one. And the surrender I keep logging as how the experience ends may be the only part of it I’ve had right the whole time.
