Heavy.

Field Notes of Rahgah - 20260911-S4

Whatever opens here opens because of what you are standing in front of it as. The other side already knows you.

It’s been about two or three weeks of not feeling like the walking dead. What that means for me: physical training swung back into full force, running strong, lifting at usual consistency, immersive altered states have returned, and more energy to spread across all activities from family to creative work.

This Tuesday the youngest boy fell ill with a cold; last night I did too. Come to think of it, patient zero was likely the oldest boy as he’s been back at school (3rd grade). While that’s a probable source of temporary suffering, I can’t help but think about another aspect I’ve been noticing for a few years now.

Our home has a wonderful baseline, or default, energy about it. The qualities that best describe it inside and out, in my opinion, are: calm, peaceful, relaxing, and light. It’s a disarming house, it’s easy to feel at ease here. I felt it before we moved in 8 years ago, and it has remained this way; arguably the house aura has been reinforced even.

Why am I saying this? When specific people come around the property, there’s a marked shift in the state of the home; the atmosphere instantly feels heavier. I wouldn’t say this is location-dependent either; the same result can be felt when returning home after contact with said specific individuals.

Then there’s the sickness. I’ve counted this long enough to know what it looks like. Someone in the house is fighting something off and a visit foils it. Everyone is fine and a visit brings something out of nowhere. Someone is on the mend and after a visit they get much worse. Related but different conditions produce similar outcomes.

The mundane explanation covers most of all that. People who spend their lives unwell and have no trepidations about being around the sick are carriers by definition; they pick things up, they don’t isolate, and they deliver. Add two kids and a school year to the mix and you don’t need anything exotic. What the mundane explanation doesn’t cover is the way the house feels, the heaviness during those visits.

Heavy has been my word for years, long before I had any vocabulary for what I was describing. That’s the part I trust most. Everything I report on here gets sorted by texture before anything else: how a presence arrives, whether it lingers, how the room feels with it in there. I’ve never sorted contacts by what they say.

It only occurred to me recently that this is the same discernment pointed at a living person walking through my front door, my field. Everything is energy after all, physical and non-physical, local and non-local.

The Karelian-Finnish practitioners I’ve been reading about for the past year sorted forces by kind. Water had its own, fire had its own, the dead had theirs, and the practitioner’s competence was mostly the ability to tell which one was in the room. A house had a presence of its own too, and a calm household was the sign that it was in good order. People at ease and dropping guard when they walk in is exactly how you’d know.

That reframes what our house is. A house with a stable baseline is a detector. It doesn’t have to do anything. It only has to stay consistent enough that a deviation reads, and ours reads like an allergic reaction: a system responding to something it isn’t compatible with, whatever that something turns out to be.

The tradition’s rule for this was blunt. Know whose force is heavy and meet them with your own raised, or don’t meet them at all. Expect to pay when you meet them tired, and this was a tired week.

Either way, I trust the house. It’s been right about everyone else.
