Reserving Judgment.
Field Notes of Nobody’s Ghost 20261005-20261011 - Retrospective
The eighth spread of Field Notes of Nobody’s Ghost.
This cycle ran one idea at three sizes, and I didn’t plan it that way.
It started small. The ghost keeps a mustache in every form, and the one time I saw my own double, it had none. I kept the mustache anyway, with a condition attached: I expect it to be gone when I see the double again. A belief held with its exit named stays ready to act on and ready to drop. That was Wednesday, and it was about a detail on a drawing.
By Friday it was about disclosure. One secondhand word on a podcast did what years of craft and greys hadn’t, and the room broke. The same clause held there. A claim I can’t walk up to and touch stays on file as testimony, my own two contacts stay on file as experience, and maybe is the position that keeps both doors open without pretending to know which one is real.
Sunday took it to the largest size I can think of: whether AI frees us or ends us. I’ve looked at the ways it fails, including the quiet one where it serves a few perfectly. I’m feeding the outcome where it serves all of us anyway, on purpose, with the exit named and my eyes open.
The panels ran the same lesson without being asked to. The ghost arrived among the Konpeitō mushroom people, a name a reader recognized in their shape before I did, disguised as one of them with only the mustache to give him away. They welcomed him, rolled him to a door in the stem, and sent him down. Whether he was helped along or pushed in, he still doesn’t know. His face says he’s reserving judgment.
That’s the posture this cycle kept arriving at, whatever the size of the question. Go in without knowing. Keep one marker of yourself. Stay calm, stay curious, and let what’s on the other side correct you.
