Where You’re Standing.

Field Notes of Nobody’s Ghost 20261019-20261025 - Retrospective

First page for the tenth spread of Field Notes of Nobody’s Ghost.

Three entries this week that look like they have nothing to do with each other. Generational slang, who gets called sane, and an afternoon in an office that isn’t quite my office. Read together, they’re really one entry. Every one of them is about how something reads depending on where you’re standing when it reaches you, and what you do about all that.

The page is the “sympathetic” gestalt of the previous thought. For the first time it’s one coherent scene across three panels, a single rescue in sequence. A light emanates from a life raft, and from the receiver it means one thing: I’m here. Talons come down to answer the call, and from inside the raft they appear to mean something else entirely. The lift succeeds, and the crown goes into the water as the price.

Same scene, three places to stand, three different perspectives. The ghost never crossed a wall. He answered a signal, got an apprehensive hand put up against him for it, picked her up anyway, and left the raft behind. Everything out there has a cost, and the cost is usually something you were holding onto.

The structure underneath all of it is verbal to imaginal. The culture ran it over thirty years, from acronyms typed on a keypad to pictures with reassigned meanings to words that are only pointers at a video. I run it every session to get an intention past the part of me that wants a mechanism first: start with words, let the image take over, drop the words.

On the daybed this past week, it all performed in both directions in one afternoon. The commands the books recommend, shouted the whole way back through a blind transit, did nothing, same as they’ve always done for me. The lift that worked during a projection came from joy at the core and the feel of levitation, no mechanics found anywhere in it. I filed the slang thought as an aside on Wednesday, by Sunday it was the thesis.

The second part is that nothing reads on its own. A token means “I’ve seen the video” or it means nothing, depending on who’s holding it. A spiritual voice is insane while the consensus story pays out and sane the moment the story stops, and the voice never changed; the room lost its reference.

Talons are a rescue from above the water and a threat from inside the raft. A window is a wall to anyone pushing on it. Every one of those is the same fact: the reading comes from where you’re standing, and the reference you measure by is usually borrowed from the room. That cuts both ways; that is why I spent Friday on the grifter who looks as sane as the mystic once the perception gate drops, and why I defined practitioner as the one who observes in (and from) their own instrument instead of taking the room’s verdict at face value.

The third part is the price, and what you do about it. The crown goes in the water; that’s the price of being rescued (or putting yourself in a situation to be rescued), and she grasps at it anyway. On Saturday I spent a projection with more agency than any before it, hands looked at on purpose to root myself, green racing through the creases, a light at the belly and chest I’d never seen there, and still gathered everything I had and shot it at a window like a buffoon.

The ceiling, which has always receded with my attempts to escape in a projection, held still and let me through, and through was the void and the exit. The door to get out was behind me the whole time. Use what’s available. The record has said it in a dozen ways; this week the office and the page said it in the same picture.

So the gestalt, in one line: look at what’s actually in front of you, the hands, the doors, the thing glowing under your shirt, and measure it with your own instrument instead of the room’s. Started verbal, ending imaginal, in the culture and in the office both.

Next cycle the ghost takes her to the city in glass. I’ll be taking the doors.

Happy Mercury Rx!
